“Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’”
– Mary Anne Radmacher

Identifying the cause and developing a course of action is a next step. We can support you in this work. It is important to identify specifically what is happening in your life as well. While bereavement, grief and loss, family disruptions, chemical substance abuse all may mimic or lead to clinical depression, the causes need to be identified and to be resolved. The DSM5 textbook definition of depression is:
“Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either subjective report (e.g., feels sad, empty, hopeless) or observation made by others (e.g., appears tearful). (Note: In children and adolescents, can be irritable mood.)”
Coldly clinical isn’t it? This type of a definition is no help in understanding the way someone feels when they are combating depression. The depth of the darkness of the mood can be almost indescribable. Family and friends advice of “pull yourself together” or “don’t worry be happy” are of no help. Even Oprah’s and Dr Phil’s miracles are of no use. Society’s message of everything should be easy and fun only causes greater depth in the despair.
Some additional symptoms of depression include:
- Loss of energy
- Fatigue
- Prolonged sadness
- Withdrawal from social activities
